All of our mojo hands are handmade here in our shop, using a blend of herbs, roots and other natural materials.
We make each hand with a specific blend of herbs, roots and powders, but no two are exactly alike… your mojo hand is truly one-of-a-kind. This is why we require the name of the person it is being prepared for in order to purchase one.

How to Use a Mojo Hand
Mojo hands are essentially constructed spirits that are the result of the combination of herbs, roots, powders and other materials contained inside of them alongside the prayers spoken over and into them. They are created different ways depending on the specific goal that they are to achieve for the person they were created for. They are living energies contained within a piece of cloth, to be used in spiritual workings, hung around your house, hidden out of sight, carried in your pocket, etc.
What to do When You Receive Your Mojo Hand From Bayou Root House
When you receive your mojo hand from Bayou Root House, there are just a few steps you need to follow in order to wake it up, name it and get it aligned to you.
When you receive your mojo hand:
- Rub some Florida Water cologne or a spiritual oil that aligns with the intent of your mojo hand, on your palms.
- Next, pick up your mojo hand and rub it between your palms, lightly applying the cologne or oil.
- Hold your mojo hand up to your mouth and speak to it, letting it know what you would like it to do for you; what its job will be. Tell it how you will take care of it in return for all its hard work. Spend a minute with it and as you speak to it, make sure that you speak from the heart and that your breath is hitting it (some people like to spray their mojo hands with an alcohol like whiskey or rum from their mouth during this step as a way to bind one’s own energy and prayers to the bag while simultaneously feeding it, but that is optional).
- Pass the bag through the smoke of a blessing incense or blow tobacco smoke from a cigar all over it. The smoke makes the spirit in the bag rise as you are breathing life into it. Tell the bag that you are waking up its spirit. Give it a name that only you will know, tell it that you will call it by that name whenever you need to ask for its assistance.
- Now, place the mojo hand in front of your forehead, over your chest (over your heart) and then in front of your mouth. The point of these movements is to seal the intention of the mojo hand to align with your thoughts, your emotions and your speech.
- For the next 7 days, keep the mojo hand hidden somewhere under your clothes. Traditionally, it would be kept somewhere it would touch the skin but you can simply carry it in your pocket if you prefer. If possible, sleep with it under your pillow for those 7 days, as well.
How to Take Care of a Mojo Hand
Mojo hands, contrary to popular belief, are not just talismans or charms. When a mojo hand is created, it is done so through the combination of various herbs, roots, oils, powders, etc… It is this collective energy of the spirits of these materials through which a new spirit is formed. This isn’t a charm, it is a living spirit and it requires the same sort of care as any other spirit.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Do not let anyone else handle your mojo hand (traditionally people would also keep them from being seen as this was thought to kill it but I have not found this to be true)
- Do not tell anyone the name of your mojo hand
- In all situations, treat your mojo hand as a sacred spiritual ally
- Talk to your mojo hand often. These don’t have to be full-on conversations, but you should speak to it about the problems you are facing in relation to its assigned job and praise it when it helps you.
- As a living spirit, your mojo hand needs to be fed so that it doesn’t stop working or completely die. As a general rule of thumb, we suggest feeding your mojo hand at least once per month (ideally around the same time every month)
How to Feed a Mojo Hand
Now that you know a mojo hand is a living spirit that requires sustenance in order to keep working for you, below are a few ways to feed a mojo hand to keep it happy, strong and working. You can do any of these or all of them, that is between you and your mojo hand:
- Take a small sip of whiskey and blow the liquor from your mouth, onto the mojo hand. Do this 3 times. And yes, it takes a little practice!
- Blow tobacco smoke from a cigar all over the mojo hand. Simply light a cigar, then turn it around and place the lit end in your mouth and blow outward so that smoke comes out of the other end and engulfs the mojo hand.
- Anoint it with a spiritual condition oil that aligns with the intent of the mojo hand, some spiritual cologne or even holy water.
