What is a Lodestone?
Lodestone is a naturally magnetized piece of the mineral magnetite. This magnetism gives it the ability to attract iron.
While magnetite itself is fairly common, not all magnetite is a lodestone. Believe it or not, lodestones are relatively rare as they are theorized to be the result of lightning strikes in or around the area in which the magnetite is found. And not all pieces of magnetite can become permanent magnets in this way. It takes a specific crystal structure within the mineral to allow it to hold the charge.
If it were not for the discovery of lodestones, we would not know as much as we do now about magnetism as lodestones were not just a critical component of the study of magnetism, we discovered magnetism because of lodestones. In fact, lodestones were so important that they were used to create the first compasses.
Fun fact: The name lodestone comes from a Middle English word lode. The word lodestone translates literally to “leading stone”.
Due to the magnetic nature of lodestones, they are often used in folk magic practices with the goal of attracting money into your life. While this blog post is focused on attracting money with a lodestone, you can use them for a variety of other spiritual workings. As they are magnets, they are useful for all sorts of attraction spells and conjure work.
Need to bring two people together? Lodestones can help with that. Need to draw some negative energy off of you? Lodestones can also be used in that way. Most magickal practitioners, however, think immediately of money spells when lodestones come up.
To prepare your lodestone to start drawing money to you, there are a few things you need to do.
How to Use a Lodestone to Attract Money
Cleansing a Lodestone
Waking up a Lodestone
This has a couple different spiritual functions; it gets the spirit of the lodestone to wake up (this is due to the heat of the alcohol) and it ties it to you spiritually as you are placing your own energy and life force onto the stone via your breath and saliva. Your saliva contains your DNA, so you are very much physically imprinting your essence onto the stone, to a degree. So ultimately, this step provides an initial life force onto the stone, giving it its own life while also connecting it to you.
Fun fact: the reason liquors are often referred to as “spirits” is because during the distillation process it looks like the spirit of the alcohol coming out (evaporation) and then getting captured (condensation).
